In 2011, with donations from several Lexington Baptist Church Senior Adult Sunday School classes, a partnership was formed between LBC, Harvest Hope Food Bank and Gilbert Primary School. This began what is now known as the Backpack Ministry. The ministry started by providing meals for 25 children at GPS who would not otherwise have had enough food over the weekend while away from school. As donations increased, sponsorships increased to provide food for over 85 children during the 2015-2016 school year.
Food is purchased from Harvest Hope Food Bank and is delivered to LBC. Twice each month, volunteers gather to pack the food and deliver it to the school. The food is then discretely put in the backpacks of children who have been identified by the school staff as needing the food for meals over the weekend.
